Between the Land and the Sea: inside the show

Published 24 November 2015

Barbara Rae RA introduces our latest Art Sales range, currently on display in the Keepers’ House.

  • Selected by artist Barbara Rae RA, Between the Land and the Sea is the third in a series of themed exhibitions in the Keepers’ House, presenting limited editions and unique works of art for sale.

The exhibition consists of works on paper, many of them limited-edition prints. “What I really want to communicate to people with this exhibition is the power of printmaking as a medium”, Rae says.

The painter and printmaker is an enthusiastic collector of prints herself: “It’s an incredibly versatile medium – it suits every artist. I think artists often express themselves in a completely different and much more genuine way in print.”

Alongside works by Royal Academicians such as Hughie O’Donoghue, Jock McFadyen, and Elizabeth Blackadder, Rae – who lives and works in Edinburgh – has selected works by established and emerging Scottish artists. The works are united by a common theme in that all have a connection to the land, the sea or the conjunction between the two, but in sometimes unexpected ways, as Rae explains in the short video below.
