A major sculptural installation by Conrad Shawcross RA has gone on display in Hong Kong this week. The work, The ADA Project, combines sculpture, robotics and music to create a dramatic visual performance, comprising a series of collaborations between Shawcross and leading contemporary composers. Inspired by 19th-century mathematician Ada Lovelace, credited as being the world’s first computer programmer, the work features an industrial robotic arm which has been programmed to move with musical accompaniment.

It is the second installation in a three-year partnership between the hotel and the Royal Academy, in which the Peninsula showcases the work of select artists – all Royal Academicians – as they interact with the building in unexpected, playful and meaningful ways. Last year Richard Wilson RA’s Hang on a Minute Lads… I’ve Got a Great Idea, a replica coach inspired by 1969 British heist film The Italian Job, teetered on the edge of the hotel’s seventh floor Grade I-listed façade.

The ADA Project is in the foyer of The Peninsula Hong Kong until 5 April 2016. It is accompanied by digital prints by Shawcross on display in the hotel’s first floor exhibition space.
