William Hogarth (1697 - 1764)
RA Collection: Art
Portrait of the mathematician and antiquarian Martin Folkes (1690-1754), engraved by William Hogarth after his own portrait of 1741, which Folkes bequeathed to the Royal Society, London, where it remains. In 1713 Folkes was elected to the society aged just twenty-three.
One notable difference from the painting is the presence, in the print, of a broken column on the left, which has been interpreted as a Masonic symbol (Folkes was a prominent Freemason).
