A major sculptural installation by Michael Craig-Martin RA has gone on display in Hong Kong, unveiled last week during Art Basel. Inspired by The Peninsula Hong Kong’s courtyard to create something that could appear to float between the hotel’s iconic fountain and the building itself, Bright Idea is a four metre-high bright yellow lightbulb, towering over the fountain as if suspended in space. The work continues the artist’s practice of creating sculptures of drawings of everyday objects; in 2014, he filled the gardens of Chatsworth House with “pictorial illusions” of a pitchfork, gate and stiletto shoe, among others.

Bright Idea is the third installation in a partnership between the hotel and the Royal Academy, which has allowed one Royal Academician each year to add their own unique touch to the historic building, with a work for The Peninsula Commission. In 2015 Richard Wilson RA was inspired by The Italian Job in creating his Hang on a Minute Lads… I’ve Got a Great Idea: a full-sized replica of a vintage Harrington Legionnaire coach that appeared to be hanging precariously off the edge of the hotel’s façade. Last year, Conrad Shawcross RA took as his inspiration the pioneering 19th-century mathematician Ada Lovelace, recreating an installation for the hotel’s foyer that combined robotics, light, sculpture and music.

Bright Idea is on display at The Peninsula Hong Kong until 31 May 2017.
