Although performance and time-based art existed throughout the 20th century, its status as “uncollectible” has only recently been refuted. Its origins were rooted in the rejection of the commodification of art, but today institutions and auction houses alike have begun to reassess the frameworks in which performance art can be collected, preserved, displayed and sold. How can artists, curators and collectors ensure the place of performance art in the marketplace and history of art?
