James McNeill Whistler</h1></h2><p><p>Congratulations, you’re James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903)!</p><p dir="ltr">You’re considered one of the best-known artists of the late 19th-century, and kept company with Gustave Courbet and the Pre-Raphaelites (in fact, Dante Gabriel Rosseti was your neighbour, and you often attended seances at his house).</p><p dir="ltr">It’s said you’re quick to anger; Rossetti jokingly (but possibly correctly) attributed this to the lead in your paint, and you got lead poisoning during a winter trip to Paris (but continued "pluckily through it all"; we can imagine you shivering in an attic in Paris!).</p><p dir="ltr">Many of your works feature a red-haired figure – Joanna Hiffernan – who was your lover and muse. Your portrait of Joanna, <em>Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl </em>(1862) is now the focus of an exhibition at the RA but in 1862 was rejected from the Summer Exhibition.</p><br /><p> </p></p></section><section><h3><h1>You are... Francis Bacon<strong style="font-size:2em;"></strong></h1></h3><p><p>Congratulations, you’re Francis Bacon (1909-1992) – the doyen of dingy 1960s Soho. You run with an eclectic crowd of artists, writers and ruffians, and will transform the art world with your semi-figurative, semi-abstract paintings of friends, lovers and animals. </p><p dir="ltr">You believe humankind is an animal, and that civilisation is a thin veneer separating us from our non-human counterparts.</p><p dir="ltr">You are deeply influenced by trips to southern Africa where you can observe animals in the wild. Back in London, you’re a regular on the social circuit where rowdy nights at the Colony Bar are your kryptonite.</p><p dir="ltr">In 1985, you rejected the offer to become a Royal Academician – and in 2022 became the focus of a five-star exhibition at the RA exploring the role of animals in your work. </p><br /><p> </p></p></section><section><h3><h2></h2><h1>You are... Kawanabe Kyōsai</h1></h3><p><p>Congratulations, you’re Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) – one of Japan’s most important master painters.</p><p>Witty, energetic and imaginative, your art continues to influence numerous artistic styles today, from manga to tattoo art.
