John Homes Smith (1797 - 1868)
RA Collection: Art
These drawings are by John Homes Smith of Worcester (1797-1868). Gilbert Bakewell Stretton (Smith's grandson), in a letter accompanying his bequest to the Royal Academy, stated that Smith was "a prolific artist; well-known in Worcester and Shropshire as a painter of horses, hounds, hunting pictures and portraits...He painted too on Coalport china - hunting cups with sporting scenes, dessert & tea services with series of landscapes from his own innumerable sketches. A large series of watercolour drawings by him of Shropshire Churches & other buildings and scenes in the county are bequeathed to the Shropshire Archaeological Society in Shrewsbury". As Stretton stated, his grandfather was involved with the porcelain painting industry in Worcester and a number of the drawings in the Stretton bequest are by porcelain painters.
