We are delighted to be working with the BBC on a very special competition this summer.

The One Show Summer Art Competition 2014 is now open and amateur artists living in the UK have the chance to exhibit their works in the same hallowed institution which has played host to past great British artists such as Constable, Gainsborough and Turner.
It is great to be working with the Royal Academician Michael Landy and the Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw on judging the competition. It will be a wonderful opportunity for us all to see a broad range of artistic talent from across the country and to work together in selecting the two winners from the two age categories. You can find out more about the competition and how to enter by visiting www.bbc.co.uk/theoneshow
The shortlisted works and the eventual winners will be displayed in an exhibition in the Reynolds Room at the Royal Academy from 17 June – 9 August 2014.
The RA could not be a better place to exhibit the finalists’ work. Founded in 1768 to promote art and artists, the RA is in many ways the spiritual home of artists in this country. The Academy is an independent charity, led by some of the UK’s leading artists - the Royal Academicians. At the very heart of the RA is Britain’s first art school, which offers the only three-year, full-time postgraduate fine arts course in the country.
Of course, we are best known amongst the public for our blockbuster exhibitions of work by the world’s greatest artists. In 2012 more than 600,000 people came here to see the exhibition David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture. The RA is also home to the annual Summer Exhibition, which has been held here (without interruption!) for 246 years and is still the world’s largest open submission exhibition of contemporary art.
The deadline for submissions is 2 May 2014. Best of luck!
Edith Devaney is Head of Summer Exhibition and Contemporary Curator at the Royal Academy of Arts.
