This year, the Summer Exhibition explores the theme of Climate. We talked some of the artists about how they approached the subject and how it feels to be on show at the Royal Academy.

We caught up with them on Non-Members Varnishing Day, a first chance for the artists of the Summer Exhibition to see their works on display.

Originally it was the day when artists would put the finishing touches to their works within the galleries. Now it’s a day of celebration that we share with those who have been selected for the exhibition.

This year is the 254th Summer Exhibition with more than 1400 works on show. It is the world’s largest open submission contemporary art show which has taken place every year without interruption since 1769.
